Media sensationalises heat issue – and twists the facts.
In a world where clickbait rules, articles often take extreme liberties with the truth. Look for example at an article on MSN by Julia Clark: https://www.msn.com/…/last-summer-we-saw…/ar-AA1nvuSa…
The title is “Last summer, we saw hundreds of people die” – Phoenix gears up for trail closures after heat-related rescues.
This title implies that the “hundreds of people who died” were on the mountain.
The heat risk is real, and hundreds of people died, but most deaths happened in areas far away from the mountains, as you can see in the overview by zip code.
On the other picture, you can see that 58% of heat deaths were related to drug use, 12% to alcohol use and 46% of the deaths came from people who are unhoused.
Heat deaths are a huge problem that needs to be addressed, but to link it to trail safety is absolutely untrue and irresponsible.
