Parks Board Final Decision March 27th.
The Phoenix Parks & Recreation Board is set to make a critical decision regarding trail access on March 27th. Your input can make a difference! Contact your elected officials by phone or email before the meeting to ensure your voice is heard.
Why This Matters
Recent trail closures at South Mountain, Camelback Mountain, and Piestewa Peak during excessive heat warnings have sparked concern among Phoenix’s outdoor community. While intended to reduce rescues and heat-related incidents, these restrictions disproportionately impact responsible hikers, bikers, and runners who rely on the trails for exercise, mental health, and connection with nature.

The closures limit access to cherished outdoor spaces that define Phoenix’s identity and lifestyle.
By focusing on education and proactive safety measures instead of sweeping restrictions, we can protect both hikers and the freedom to enjoy these iconic trails responsibly.

Alternatives to Closures

Guided Safety Hikes
Offer guided hikes led by experienced locals or park rangers during heat advisories to ensure safety and provide education.
